In 2002 Velocity's racing team
gained it's first sponsor - Off the Record, which provides
counselling support and information services for young people
aged 11 - 25 living in Havant, Portsmouth and the surrounding
areas. Off the Record remained the primary sponsor for the
team for 2 years and at the end of 2003 the contract expired
and was not renewed.
It was not long before Velocity gained another sponsor
for their racing team and in 2004 the riders had a new sponsor,
and team kit on their backs. The new sponsor, The Exercise
Deck, was introduced to Velocity through a mutual friend
of the shop, Paul Butler, who also worked at the premises
as an PT instructor. The Exercise Deck, which is a modern
sports centre open to the general public and based at Admiral
Lord Nelson's School in Portsmouth, sponsored the team for
three years and enjoyed a wealth of publicity through results
and awards gained by the riders. At the end of the 2007
racing season The Exercise Deck decided not to renew it's
contract with the shop & the team and paved the way
for the team to become a cycling club.
During November 2007 the team had a complete face lift.
It was decided that the team would start the process to
becoming a cycling club and be known as Velocity Bikes Cycling
Club (VBCC). VBCC is still in this process and will very
shortly become a club with it's own committee and constitution
with Velocity Bikes (Portsmouth) Ltd being it's only sponsor.
VBCC also has a new clothing design, following the corporate
colours of Vélocity Bikes (Portsmouth) Ltd, (Green,
Black and Red).
This new kit has been registered with the cycling organisations
mentioned on our Homepage and allows our members to race
at their events. The old Velocity/the Exercise Deck team
strip is still available for purchase, at a reduced price,
from the shop but only while stocks last. Members can ride
the old strip whilst cycling/training, but if competing
in local/national road or time trial events they have to
wear the new registered club kit, which arrives shortly
and in time for the change over from Race team to Club.
